I am just a little too young to have worked on old school mainframes like the IBM 360 (I did see the one beside the Google campus in the computer history museum and several mainframes in the diefenbunker and an actual working VAX with a raised floor and clipboard secured room at the Privy Council in Ottawa - but I have a lot of respect for the new generation of mainframes in regard to their extensive parallelization throughput.

That said - the cloud - as we move from IaaS (EC2) through PaaS (Elastic Beanstalk) through SaaS (Workmail) all the way to FaaS (functions as a service - the holy grail of microservices) - we are starting to go back to timesharing - and throwing out all vestiges of our lift and shift cloud lifted VMs for AWS Lambda (for Azure Functions).
